Ký tự ぱ đại diện cho âm tiết 'pa', âm 'p' cứng theo sau bởi 'a'. Đây là は với handakuten — một vòng tròn nhỏ ở phía trên bên phải làm cho phụ âm từ 'h' thành 'p'. Handakuten là một trong hai dấu phụ của hiragana tiếng Nhật (cùng với dakuten).
